What it is

Finis is a writing app for books on Mac and iPad. It keeps every chapter in a Markdown file, in a folder that stays yours, and gives it the tools of a book: a tree of folders and documents, an outline, a board, continuous text, revisions, statistics and goals. When the book is ready, Finis exports it to Word, ePub, PDF and HTML.

What it does

  • Your text stays yours. Every document is a Markdown file in an ordinary folder, on the Mac or in iCloud Drive, that any other app can read.
  • The shape of a book. Folders become parts and chapters, the sidebar becomes the table of contents, and the outline, the board and continuous text show the same book in different ways.
  • From draft to book. Export to Word, ePub, PDF and HTML, with numbered chapters, a title page and pages of their own for a dedication or an epigraph.
  • From where you write today. Import from Scrivener, from Word and from the TextBundles of Ulysses, Bear and iA Writer.
  • Virgil, if you want it. An AI editorial assistant: it answers questions about the book, gives it a second reading, proposes synopses and variants. It’s optional and uses the service you choose, with your own key.
  • Mac and iPad. The same app and the same purchase, with the same projects through iCloud Drive.

The name

The name comes from the finis Africae, the secret room of the library in Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose. In Latin, finis means “end”: here, the end of your book. Finis is designed and built in Italy by Giovanni Di Gregorio, an independent developer, and you pay for it once.
