Finis is an app for writing. Your texts are yours: they stay in the folders you choose. Optional writing assistance sends selected texts to the selected service (DeepSeek, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or Grok (xAI)) only when you press Send.
What Finis does not do.
Finis asks you to create no account, shows no ads, does not measure how you use it and does not track you across apps and websites. Optional assistance transmits data to the selected service as described below. Finis has no manuscript server of its own. If you enable assistance, the app connects directly to the selected service.
Where your texts are.
A Finis project is a folder of files on your Mac or iPad, wherever you choose. If you keep it in iCloud Drive or another synced folder, that service does the syncing, under its own privacy policy; Finis has no access beyond the files you open.
What Finis keeps on your Mac or iPad.
The app’s preferences; the bookmarks the system grants for the folders you chose, so that Finis reopens them without asking again; automatic backups and document versions, in the app’s container (~/Library/Containers/com.getfinis.mac). They stay on your Mac until you delete them: Settings › Projects opens the backup folder in the Finder. On the iPad the same data sits in the app’s container, on that iPad, and goes with the app.
The Library.
Which projects and files you put in the Library is remembered in a small file in Finis’s iCloud container, in your iCloud account and outside the Finis folder you see, so that the Mac and the iPad show the same Library. For each item it holds where it is — its path within iCloud Drive or, for what is only on one device, its path there with a random identifier of that device and the kind of device —, the date of its last change, and nothing of your texts. Apple syncs it like the rest of your iCloud Drive; without iCloud it stays on the device. An item removed from the Library stays marked as removed for 60 days, so that the other device learns it too, then leaves the file.
Writing assistance.
It is optional. Connect DeepSeek, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini Developer API or Grok (xAI) with your own API keys and choose a model for each function. Each key stays in the Keychain of the Mac or iPad you enter it on, without syncing, and is sent only to its service to authenticate requests; it is not included in projects, preferences or Finis backups. Preferences and the local cache contain assignments and model catalog metadata, without keys or texts.
Before Send, inspect the selected texts; they are transmitted directly to the named provider with document titles, types and identifiers, the book’s language and your request. The service also receives your IP address. Verify and Save and Refresh Models read the catalog without sending manuscripts or generating responses. Test Compatibility, explicitly requested by the author, sends a synthetic sentence and may use credit; it does not use project texts.
Responses remain in window memory; they enter the project only when applied or saved as notes, retaining their actual origin. The first request to each provider requires specific consent: a key or catalog does not grant it, and DeepSeek consent does not authorize other services. Withdraw it in Settings › Virgil or Help › Privacy and Data to stop that provider’s requests and prevent new ones. Disabling Virgil stops all requests. This does not delete data already received by the services.
Providers may retain requests under your account’s applicable terms; Finis does not control retention periods. OpenAI and xAI requests use store: false for response storage; this does not promise zero provider retention. For access to or deletion of provider-held data, consult DeepSeek, OpenAI, Anthropic, the Gemini API terms or xAI. Usage follows the service’s API plan and is billed separately from the Finis trial and unlock.
Texts go only to the service you choose, under your own account: protection, retention and deletion follow your agreement with that service. Some services or plans may use requests and responses to improve or train their models. Check your account terms and settings before sharing confidential texts. Gemini’s unpaid quota outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK may also involve human review.
This release of Finis is intended for adults. Gemini additionally requires professional or business use in supported regions; users in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK need a Google project with active billing.
Trial and purchase.
The free trial and the unlock go through the App Store. Apple handles the payment: Finis receives only the confirmation that a purchase exists, to unlock the app, and no payment data. Apple’s privacy policy applies.
Crash reports.
If you chose in System Settings on your Mac, or in Settings on your iPad, to share analytics with developers, Apple may send us anonymous reports about Finis crashing. Apple governs these reports; you can turn off sharing in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements, and on the iPad in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
Managing local data.
Remove your key in Settings › Virgil, delete files in the Finder or the Files app and, on the Mac, open the backup folder in Settings › Projects; on the iPad, backups are deleted with the app. Deleting a project does not automatically delete backups or copies held by sync services.

Website analytics.

Only with your consent, this website loads Google Analytics 4, a Google service, to measure page views, traffic sources, clicks to the Mac App Store and plays of the presentation video. Google receives technical browser and device data and browsing data; the _ga and _ga_C2FMVPN2XL cookies distinguish visits and are configured with a maximum lifetime of 180 days. Advertising features and Google Signals are disabled.
Before you accept, we do not load Analytics or send measurements to Google. Your choice is stored in your browser for 180 days. You can change or withdraw consent through ‘Analytics preferences’ at the bottom of every page. Withdrawal stops new measurements and removes this integration’s cookies, but does not delete data already sent. We also respect Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. We do not send search text, URL parameters, app usage or manuscripts. Google may process data outside your country under its terms; contact the controller below for information or data requests.
