Suggest instead of changing
In Markup › Review you suggest adding, removing or replacing words, and Highlight (⇧⌘H) marks a passage. The text stays as it is until you accept: right-click a mark to accept or reject it.
With Track Changes While Writing (⌃⌘R), what you type becomes a suggestion and what you delete stays, marked for removal, as with tracked changes in Word. While it is on, the bottom of the page says “Tracked Changes”.
Every suggestion
In the inspector (⌥⌘I), the Review tab lists the comments and suggestions of the document or of the whole book, to accept, reject or resolve one at a time or all together.
Versions
- Open the Versions tab in the inspector.
- Save a Version… keeps a named copy of the document, say “Before the edit”. Finis also keeps copies of its own on this Mac, for thirty days.
- Choose a version to compare it word by word with the text as it is now, and restore it if you need to.
Emphasize
To reread, View › Emphasize › Dialogue keeps the characters’ lines at full contrast and dims the narration: between quotes, “ ”, « » or „ “, and after a dash at the start of a paragraph, where each dash goes from the line to the narration and back. It is not a writing mode: it does not follow the caret, the focus waits while it is on, and the next time Finis opens it is off. Under the page, Dialogue emphasized says so; click it to turn it off.
